The Best National Days: June
Holidays are becoming pretty convoluted. Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween are great, but it isn’t rare to hear someone ranting about commercialization and then start bashing Hallmark and “big business”. All that and you’ve probably been recognizing and possibly celebrating them, or some variation of them, since you were born. They are fun, but they might be a little old.
So let’s change things up. It’s about time North America gives some other national days the spotlight, even if they don’t get you time off work. For June, we have some pretty interesting days lined up.
Kicking off the start of June is a pretty glorious day – National Donut Day. Or National Doughnut Day. Despite your preference, it’s a pretty sweet way to start off the month and is much more accepting than the National Chocolate Macaroon or National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Days, on the 3rd and 9th respectively.
Next up, every month has its fair share of “National [insert alcoholic drink here] Days”, and June seems to cater to the classy, and those living in the southern parts of the United States of America. On June 4th and 5th, we have National Cognac and national Moonshine day, respectively. It’s almost as if Congac day is going to make up for the following day, which might turn in a blacked out haze if you celebrate it. Around the middle of the month, on June 14th and 19th, are National Bourbon Day and National Martini Day. Following National Cognac Day, you have the first three weeks to feel like you’re a lot fancier than you are.
Now we have some of the more off-the-wall National Days. On June 3rd, you’ll be urged to do stuff a second time if you choose to observe National Repeat Day. Yes, a day where you’re encouraged to do anything you do a second time – have breakfast for breakfast as well as dinner, or maybe watch an episode of something on Netflix twice in a row. Whether you think it be for luck or just for fun, do something a second time.
On June 25th, you might be hearing people talk about how it’s halfway until Christmas (damn popular holiday). Well adding to that is National Leon Day, which is when people have a mid-year Christmas celebration. The “Leon” comes from reversing Noel, another word for Christmas. I guess National Samtsirhc Day was a little confusing. If you’re a Christmas Nut though, you’ll love this holiday no matter what.
Finally is my favourite of all holidays in June simply for its sheer absurdity. On June 9th, North America is blessed with National Earl Day, as according to nationaldaycalendar.com. While you may wonder what the gimmick is, as there is with Leon Day or Repeat Day, National Earl Day is literally a day where you celebrate guys named Earl. Maybe you have a friend or family member named Earl, or maybe you’re just going to watch Jason Lee’s mid to late 2000’s show, My Name Is Earl, but it’s a holiday nonetheless.
June has plenty more holidays than this – at least one per day if you wanted to look at them on nationaldaycalendar.com . I pointed out a few of the more notable ones, but many of them correlate with baked goods or activities that you may be passionate about. Even if you’re just subtly amused by them, it’s a good excuse to do something you don’t normally do or haven’t done in a long time. Maybe it’s time you picked up a new hobby or tested your tastebuds with something new. You can expand your horizons one nationally recognized day at
